The Boss talks to IGN about how the brand extension is changing things.
Last summer, at NXT TakeOver: Brooklyn, Sasha Banks and Bayley had, arguably, the best match of the entire year. This year, Sasha’s walking into WWE SummerSlam as the Women’s Champion to defend her title against former champ Charlotte.
On top of that, Sasha will be in a WWE video game for the first time via 2K17. For Banks, a gamer herself, this is also a big deal, as she explained to IGN at the 2K17/SummerSlam kickoff event in New York this week.
“When October 11th rolls around, the first thing I’m going to do is play 2K17,” said Banks. “I saw a little bit of myself in the game and it looked awesome. It’s a dream come true to be in the game. It’s my first time being in it. And then when you add walking into SummerSlam as Women’s Champion, there are so many things going on in my life and it’s amazing.”
Right now, the women’s division has been split up between the red (RAW) and blue (SmackDown) brands – a move Banks admitted had her worried at first. “Now I think, overall, it’s a good opportunity for the division,” she remarked. “Because the women are taking over and they should be on both shows. Keeping them on one show isn’t fair.”
“Now there’s more opportunity to see more women who haven’t been shown yet,” Banks added. “Like, this is a great opportunity for Naomi. She’s one of my favorites to watch. And Natalya and Becky. People will get more opportunities now. Especially with the new girls on SmackDown like Alexa Bliss and Carmella. We’ve got Nia Jax on RAW. It’s an exciting time to be a woman in the WWE.”
Sasha, who currently appears weekly on RAW, also has high hopes for her TakeOver opponent from last year — and real life good friend — NXT’s Bayley. “Hopefully we’ll get Bayley soon… and on RAW!”
With the women now spread over two shows, there are rumors swirling that SmackDown will soon get its own women’s title. But if so, what should it be called? “Why can’t it be called the Women’s Championship too?” Banks asked. “And just make it blue?”
Since Sasha’s in the business of breaking down barriers, we asked her when she thought we might see a woman on the cover of a WWE game.
“I’m going to start a petition so I can be on the cover next year,” she said with a grin. “Brock kind of pushed me out of the way this time around, but next year, it’s all mine!”
As for Sasha’s favorite old school games, she had three easy picks. “Perfect Dark, Mario Kart, and Sonic,” she said. “Those are my all time favorites. Mario Kart I really love.”
